CONGRESSMAN FEARS GUAM TIPPING OVER

On April 1, 2010 during a hearing of the Congressional House Armed Services Committee regarding relocating 8,000 naval personnel and their families to the Island of Guam which is a territory of the US, Congressman Hank Johnson, Jr. (D-GA 4) made a comment regarding the stability of the small island.

It wasn't the political or economic stability of the island that concerned him but the man was clearly afraid that the additional population may cause the island to tip over into the Pacific Ocean.

Johnson was quoted as saying, "My fear that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," as he emphasized his statement by making a tipping motion with his hands.

Adm. Robert Willard, who made his best effort not to burst out in laughter responded "We don't anticipate that..."

While many are citing the fact that he has Hepatitis C, from the research that I have done on the disease it does not appear to have an effect on someone's brain. The Congressman later explained in a statement that he was merely using the concept of capsizing as a metaphor for the stress that 8,000 soldiers and their families could put on the tiny island.

If anything, those additional troops would be a plus to the local economy and not a negative.

Guam's Congressional Representative Madeleine Bordallo doesn't believe the congressman was serious. "He was saying that in jest. I don't know how it was said or when, but I know Congressman Johnson; he's been here. I'm sure it was just a joke," she said during a radio interview.

This story reminded me of the wacky remarks by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA 35) during the "Rodney King riots in Los Angeles where she stated that people were looting stores for diapers and baby formula. The only problem with the statement is that gun shops don't sell diapers and baby formula.

These are the people who run the country. Totally acluistic (meaning they don't have a clue).
